RODCON 2007 photos! ^__^
As mentioned in my previous post, February 4 was spent at the InterCon for the RodCon event. It was great, it was fun, we found some great stuff, some people sort of freaked us out, we attended a panel that had Carlo Vergara in it, and we managed to catch live performances by Swissy, Up Dharma Down and Radioactive Sago Project. A good day, ne? ^^

And here comes the truckload of saturated snapshots (I swear, my camera hates me, AND it apparently hates indoor light, too).

RodCon 2007. Here's to 2008!! ^__^

Just right beside the entrance, these were the first things that we saw. Yes, as expected, for a good five minutes, I had to fight the terrible, terrible urge to start a stampede that would send everyone out through the emergency exits, while I gather all the lovely books in the tablecloth and hail a cab that would take me to Aparri... It was a good dream. XD

I want this book so bad since it comes in... *checks google* limited hardcover edition of 10 lettered boxed and signed copies (presentation copies — not for sale), 290 numbered boxed and signed copies, and 1700 numbered trade copies. DAMMIT!!

The lovely ballroom of the InterCon.

Ian makes his first purchase for the day.

Yoda looking a little glum on the New Worlds Alliance's table. Probably because he was made to sit beside a copy of "The Star Trek Cookbook" which was bigger than him.

The facade of the InterCon, as viewed from the patio, where we hung out for a while to rest.

Ian enjoying his new (?) comic books.

Stuff from the bargain bin which I got for myself. Not bad, for less than 200 pesos (US$4?). The one on the right is actually pretty thick, with nice, glossy pages.

More stuff that I want!!! T_T

But this one takes the cake... I'm a Drizzt fangirl, and I can't help it. The fact that it's a signed copy AND it was on sale, but I still couldn't buy it, breaks my heart to tiny little bits. T_T Anyway, I still haven't given up on finding a copy of the compilation of the first three books for this saga.

Pieces of Philippine comic book history, as displayed at the lobby. I love this exhibit because it just... I dunno. It just reminds me of an era when life seemed slower, and people had time to stop and pick up a copy of their favorite komiks.

Absolutely KICK-ASS. Nobody can ever do it like the masters do.

This exhibit was a wonderful reminder that whatever money we paid for the tickets to the con (well, it's actually just 150 pesos each, in our case) would later be put to good use.

English-translated manga on display over at the PowerBooks area. Not that I want to buy any of them, but they just looked so pretty, grouped together like that.

I bet this chandelier is more used to watching debuts, wedding receptions and other boring shit like that. XD XD

Rotch as she was facilitating the trivia contest. People were basically asked questions about famous books, etc, and you got to choose a free book from the pile on the stage. I like this shot (as blurry as it is) because of the three guys on the side who are listening for the next question. They look like they're about to pounce on Rotch, and they'd probably stab people if they got in the way of the free books. XD
(Miss Rotch!! I'm sorry I didn't approach you at the event. You looked so busy and I didn't want to get in your way. T_T)

Karen, manning the secretariat table/registration table during the few times that I caught her outside of the lecture rooms. XD That expression is due to the fact that I cannot count properly. I swear, the camera went off by itself. Hehehehe! XD

Convention badge. I took the pic while Ian and I were having a late lunch at A Venetto's in nearby Glorietta.

The Glorietta entrance, as viewed from the lawn in front of it. We were walking back to the InterCon when I took this shot.

I never really got the chance to wander around that part of the grounds before, so I was a bit surprised to find cascades and artificial dolphins there. Ian is particularly fond of the photo of the dolphin on the left, because he took it, and according to him, the dolphin looks like it's peeing. XD

We finally made it back to the InterCon's ballroom, and as Ian and I were cluelessly trying to figure out where to go next and what to do until the guest bands start performing, Khursten just appeared beside us. She told us that a panel was about to start, that it was about comics and that it needed two more people in the audiece. Having nothing else to do, we thought it would be fun, so we signed up. As it turned out, the speakers for that panel included Zsa Zsa Zaturnnah creator Carlo Vergara, as well as the author of Wasted, Gerry Alanguilan. Two of my favorite local titles. Talk about lucky!! And I have Khursten to thank. ^___^ Oh, and these pics were ones that I took while we were waiting for the lecture to start, and Khursten was getting acquainted with Vergara. Hee hee! XD (peace tayo, ha? ^_^;;)

Carlo Vergara as he was speaking to all of us. (At this point, I just want to comment that there were several attendees of the lecture who completely creeped me out. One was annoying since she brought up a question which was mainly just related to her own personal issues in life. One other girl was yet another potent reminder of what I could have turned into if I had continued down the road of The Annoying Creepy Fangirl [TM]...)

Ian's wrist stamp.

And here comes the musicians!!
(*Crowd cheers as K's uninteresting crap is finally over*)

First up was Swissy.

Next was Up Dharma Down. Now, previously, I've always remained unimpressed by their songs which I hear on the radio or catch on MTV. Apparently, what I needed was to see them perform live. Those guys can play some mean guitar, while that girl has a gorgeous voice. It may not be quite enough to spur me to purchase their album, but I may just start considering fighting for tickets to their shows...

Dude with the mean riffs.

One thing that I need to take note of is that during this performance, they performed an original song which they put together especially for the RodCon. It's basically a piece of classic Filipino literature which was been set to music. Sadly, I missed the title of the piece that they made the arrangement for. :(

And here comes the adoring crowd...

And this is the part where we all started smelling burnt electrical wires, as one of the amps apparently blew right before their last song. XD Thankfully, the issue was fixed in several minutes.

And here comes the heavyweights of the evening, Radioactive Sago Project.

Now, before I proceed to shut up and just bombard everyone's bandwidth with more pictures, Radioactive also set a piece of literature to their brand of music. For their piece, they used Nick Joaquin's "The Summer Solstice". Genius, as usual. At the end of the night, I was kicking myself for not bringing my copy of Lourd de Veyra's book, Shadowboxing in Headphones. He was gamely granting autographs at the end of their set. T_T It was sort of weird though, since everyone around us were saying, "Dali! Lapitan mo na si Lourd!" (to foreigners: this sounds sort of wrong in the local vernacular. The vocalist's name is pronouced as "Lord". Therefore, what they just said equates to "Go on! Walk up to the Lord!!"), or "Pumunta ka na kay Lourd!" ("Go to the Lord!"), etc. XD XD

Setting up...

The first few drumbeats, the first few notes from the trumpet, the first few words, and the audience immediately went wild.

The guys were directly in front of us, so might as well take a picture. XD

More of those "Adoring Crowd shots" that I love...

Raise your voice!!!

One of my favorite shots.

Quotable quotes during Radioactive's performance:

Lourd: Medyo bago samin 'to kasi, parang eto pa lang yata yung gig namin na... walang nagbubugbugan, walang nagsasaksakan, walang nagma-marijuana dyan sa tabi...

-----------

(After an energetic song)
Lourd: O ayan, dapat pag ganito may beer na e. Kaso puro libro lang. So many people in glasses!

-----------

(As Lourd was introducing their arrangement for The Summer Solstice, a girl from the crowd shouted realy loudly, "GO LOURD!!"

Lourd: Yeah. Go me.

----------

Lourd: This next song is about love. Love for your elders, love for your friends, love for your family, (stuff I don't remember... -K) .... love for your country. "Gin Pomelo"...

XD XD

... when the amplifiers finally dripped out of our ears, we left the hotel... and I headed straight to work. Bummer, believe me. XD

At least we've got these to show for afterwards. XD

And now, I sleep...

Zzzzzz....

The drawings are absolutely amazing! I wonder how long it took them to draw those. Marami tayong mga magagaling na comic book artists.

My hubbie would drool all over the place if he goes there. He loves comics. He loves 'em to bits.

Natawa ako dun sa Lourd post mo! I guess it's better than being named "Barbie" by your parents! -_-

Grabe, art by Larry Alcala... is just impeccable. @_@ Hehe... gusto ko na sana itakbo yung nakasabit na print dun e. Looking at their artwork reminds me that when I was a kid, I had my first dose of the classics from Tagalog komik adaptations. Beauty and the Beast, The Rose of Alhambra, Hamlet... I was about 4 years old then. Now that I look back, I feel sorry that my folks gave the comic books away years later. They pages were already yellow and brittle at that time, so... :(
